Self-Care Is Essential for Women of Color
Women of color face unique pressures, from workplace bias to cultural expectations, making intentional self-care not a luxury but a necessity. Studies show that stress levels among women of color remain significantly higher than the national average.
A recent EXHALE survey of 1,005 Black women found that nearly half said stress affects their daily life, and 1 in 4 required medical care because of stress. Katara McCarty, founder of EXHALE, noted, "We're surrounded by messages telling us we're strong enough to manage anything - but this survey proves the toll chronic stress is taking."
National health data also shows that Black and Hispanic adults are more likely to report poor health, yet less likely to receive mental-health care, highlighting long-standing disparities.
For many women of color, self-care includes culturally grounded practices like community support, spiritual routines, and creative expression. Access to culturally competent therapy is also becoming a vital tool.
Self-care, in this context, becomes an act of resilience. By prioritizing rest, mental health, and physical wellness, women of color strengthen not only themselves but the communities they support.
